1Q40.26 Pulling on the Whirligig

A ball on a string rolls on the lecture table. In one case the cord wraps itself around a vertical rod. In the other, the cord is pulled through a hole in the table. Use hearing to judge the angular speed of the ball

This whirligig demo shows a large glass plate sitting on a square cart. The plate and cart each have a hole through their center. Below the cart rests a hooked mass. A string runs from the mass, up through the center holes, and out to connect to a small red ball that rests on the glass.

Some of the components for this demo are laid out on a table: the red ball, strings, screws, hooked mass, screwdriver, length of wire, and tiny length of PVC pipe.
