1Q40.25 Pulling on the Whirligig

Pull on the bottom mass of the whirligig.

A pivoted pulley is mounted to a short, straight tube. Thanks to the pivot, the pulley can rotate. A string runs from a hooked mass, up through the center of the tube, over the pulley, and out the top to connect to a tennis ball. The apparatus is shown resting on a table.

Pulling on the bottom mass, increases the ball’s angular velocity.
