1M20.11 Pulley Advantage

Place a mass on a string over a pulley and hold a spring scale at the other side. Repeat with a mass hanging from a single pulley in a loop of string.

A tall man stands beside a spring scale hooked to a sturdy floor stand. One end of a rope is fixed to another post on the stand. The rope runs down over a pulley and back up to loop around the spring scale. A large mass is hooked to the bottom of the pulley and hangs about a foot above the floor. The spring scale reads around 33 N. A large pulley is hooked to a sturdy floor stand. A rope runs from a large hanging mass, up over the pulley, and back down to a spring scale. The demonstrator holds the spring scale in place, approximately on a level with the hanging mass, though off to one side. In this configuration, the spring scale reads around 55 N.
