2B30.20 Crush a 55 gal drum

Boil water in a 55 gal. drum using three LP gas burners.  The barrel crushes at about a half atmosphere.

An intact metal 55-gallon drum stands next to a thoroughly crumpled metal 55-gallon drum. The sides of the crushed drum took the most damage. An intact metal 55-gallon drum stands on a short red metal stand that supports gas burners beneath the drum. A thick protective glove rests on top of the drum. Behind the drum, a thoroughly crushed metal 55-gallon drum sits on the floor. This close-up of the top of a metal 55-gallon drum shows the bungs and fittings that allow someone to seal up the drum. The top of the drum is suitably rusty.

The Numbers:

Dia 55 cm
Height 87 cm

Ends: area of circle π r^2 = 55/2^2 * 3.14= 2374 cm^2 times 2 ends is 4950 cm^2
Side: 87*π*d=15000 cm^2
side plus ends 15000 + 5000 = 20000 cm^2
Atmospheric pressure is about 1 kgf/cm^2 so about 20,000 Kgf or 20 tons of force on the drum
