Drive a nail into a block of wood with a model pile driver.

 

An aluminum tube about half a meter long is held vertically in a clamp. A wooden block is positioned below the tube. Nails stuck into the block at various depths show how it is to be used. The nail exactly below the tube is just barely fixed in the wood -- but not for long. A hand holds a thick mass at the top of tube, about to release it to strike the nail. A high-contrast ruler is clamped vertically next to the tube.
