5K20.24 Plates and Magnets

Rest the magnet on its side on the copper plate and push it over like a domino to show how eddy currents slow its descent. Dropping the magnet from about 6 inches up while spinning it will give a more dramatic effect. Cooling the copper plate with liquid nitrogen will increase its conductivity and cause the magnet to bounce.

A demo direct from a presentation by Nobel Prize recipient Doug Osheroff. Drop a large diameter neodymium magnet on a copper plate. Then cool the plate with liquid nitrogen and see what happens.
