5K20.30 Jumping Ring

Place a closed ring around the copper core and turn on the coil to make the ring jump. Then show how the open ring doesn’t jump. Holding a closed ring in place around the core with a pair of tongs while powering the coil will cause the ring to heat up. Place it in a cup of water to produce steam. Cool it down to liquid nitrogen temperatures and observe the difference in height.

For an analysis on the jumping ring, see AJP 69(8), 911.
