1K20.11 Tug of War

Observe the relative motion of two battery operated toy cars engaged in a tug of war with and without friction, or with one car having more friction than the other.

A force sensor is mounted to a large remote-controlled car. A second force sensor is mounted to a motorized cart. A string connects the two sensors. The first car's remote control and a computer recording the force sensor output are included in the photo.

A screenshot from Vernier's LoggerPro software. In a photo inset, we see the large remote-controlled car and the motorized cart, each with its sensor. The two carts are facing away from each other. Most of the screen shows a graph of force vs time for two force sensors. The data from sensor 1 is a mirror image of the data from sensor 2. At the bottom, the 'live' readout shows Force 1: 7.811 N, Force 2: -7.598 N.

Place different surfaces under cars to observe different effects of friction.
