1J40.50 Roberval Balance

Neutral equilibrium is maintained at any position on the platform.

This photograph shows a three-armed balance. A vertical rod supports a horizontal wooden bar with a platform on either end. A second wooden bar bisects the first, stretching at an angle down and to the right, ending with its own platform directly below the right platform of the first bar. A hooked mass rests on the only left-hand platform. A second hooked mass rests on the lower right-hand platform.

A more conventional square-framed Roberval balance is shown. The basis is a square frame, face-on to the camera, set on a vertical rod. Two thin metal rods extend horizontally from the right and left sides of this frame. Weights have been set on these thin rods. Going back to the square frame, the right and left sides of the frame extend upward past the top bar of the frame. Each side ends in a platform. A hooked mass is set on each platform. The balance is currently in balance.
