1J40.21 Torque Hinge Board

Use a spring scale to lift a hinged board from various points along the board.

A long board with a pivot at one end is set in a table clamp so that the far end can be raised and lowered like a paper cutter, drawbridge, or cheese slicer. One meter and half-meter marks are clearly painted on the board. Part-way down the board is a fixed hook, currently hooked to a spring scale which is held by a hand. The board is held at a shallow upward angle. The scale indicates about 9.8 N. For more flexibility, string looped around the board can be slipped to any point along the board's length. The string can then be used to hook the spring scale to any point along the board.
