1G20.70 Accelerometer Cart On Ramp

The water surface of a liquid accelerometer on a tilted ramp remains parallel to the angle of the air track during acceleration.

A table stand supports a cart track at an incline. The track rises from right to left in the photograph. The track is equipped with a pulley at the left (high) end. A cart sits at the right (low) end of the track. A transparent, rectangular-sided bottle is strapped to the cart so that its largest side is face-on to the camera. The bottle is half-full of water, dyed for high contrast, and is capped. The bottle and cart are inclined at the same angle as the track on which the cart rests. The surface of the water in the bottle is horizontal with respect to gravity; that is, it is inclined with respect to the bottle's current angle. Given the pulley, the cart could be pulled up the incline with a string and a hooked mass, or could simply be drawn to the top of the incline and allowed to slide down the track under gravity.
