1G10.40 Atwood’s Machine

Two equal masses are hung from a light pulley. A small percentage of one mass is moved to the other side.

A pulley on a short rod is clamped to a table stand such that the string hanging from both sides of the pulley hangs freely in mid-air. A hooked mass is slung from each side of the string in the classic Atwood's machine configuration. As is often done to emphasize the point that equal mass does not equate to equal height, the two masses are deliberately set with one higher than the other.
