Hang a mass on a spring scale. Moving the scale up and down will give readings that permit a quantitative test of Newton’s second law.

A 20-N spring scale in the dial style, with a high-contrast indicator needle, supports a 1-kg hooked mass. The indicator needle predictably reads almost, but not quite, 10 N. The spring scale is suspended by a sturdy hook at the top.
