1D52.10 Flattening Earth

Fasten the base of the sphere into the spindle using the finger screw. Slowly crank up the motor until the sphere flares out.

A short vertical hollow rod rises from a small motor fixed to a base. A long brass rod inserted into the short rod is surrounded by an oblate brass-colored blur, suggesting that something is spinning rather rapidly. A look at the actual apparatus reveals four brass strips that together outline a sphere surrounding the central brass rod. One end of the strip set is free to slide up the rod, so that when the rod is spinning, the strips distort, creating the oblate blur.
